One year after Suvarnabhumi airport grand opening repairs begin on new taxiway cracks and workers are now fixing what can still be fixed before the road collapse.

New cracks appear every week at the airport so commercial aircraft must avoid the damaged area and passengers must walk a further distance to the passenger terminal.

The problem is that the new cracks are very big, almost four metres in length and they come from  excessive groundwater which erupted due to the large number of planes passing through the area which has not been drained correctly.

Thai officials still repeat that the cracks pose no danger to either aircraft or passengers but international experts say that the danger really exist.

Repairs are made by original constructors including Italian-Thai Development, Japan's Obayashi group, and Takenaka Corp because construction is guaranteed until 2008.

No flights have been delayed at Suvarnabhumi because of the cracks but some airlines are now flying to the ancient Don Muang airport to reduce daily flights at the new international bangkok airport.

Since the construction of Suvarnabhumi airport has started it has remained mired in controversy and it is said unsafe and built on swampy ground even though it has operated safely since it opened. and no international airlines have cut services to the airport.

Suvarnabhumi airport is already too crowded and it couldn't handle more passengers without an extension, that's also why the former bangkok airport Don Muang has been reopened for some domestic flights and soon for some international flights.

This airport is perfectly located at around 25 km from Bangkok center and can be accessed in 20 minutes cab ride by expressway, a little more at rush hour, and soon faster with the airport rail link that has been delayed for one year at least and that will open in 2008 or 2009.

The new airport rail link will soon be the best way for most passengers to go to the city without using taxi or limousine service but waiting for that, if you are using taxi service, avoid the touts at the arrival hall because they usually charge more than the official taxi and can be bothersome, most being unofficial agents for taxis and hotels proposing unlicensed transport to the Pattaya tourist strip without any insurance and sometimes in questionable vehicles.

Suvarnapoom airport (this is the way to pronounce) still has signalling problems but it's actually quite easy to find your way if you don't follow the signs as the airport is only one huge building with different floors, so just be logic and you will find your way.
